We are going to France this spring and plan to visit the Loire chateaux before heading South. What would be the nicest way to get to the Montpellier area? And would it be convenient to do that in one trip (about 7 hours) or maybe it's better think of a multi-day trip? Thanks!

From Tours as a starting point you have motorways all the way through (A71 then A78).

All in all that's around 670 kms, 650 on motorways so yes, you can do it in one trip. As you arrive in the south you will be able to take the Millau bridge so make sure to do it in daylight.

The countryside is nice, you will drive a good half of it through the Massif Central mountains. Motorway toll for a car is around 40 Euros.

While driving though the mountain stop at one of those motorway petrol stations with a big shop and look for the local delicacies. If you are lucky you will find coucougnettes de coq, the perfect thing to horrify friends and family (rooster balls).
